Gilles Torrent – Buleria [Jazzman Records]

Swiss Tenor Saxophonist Gilles Torrent is following the path of the esteemed tenor legends that have set the bar. Certainly John Coltrane heads the top of that list and his influence resonates throughout this disc. “Buleria”, his latest release is a modal jazz gem that pays tribute to the Tenor titan. The opener “Dense Tropicale” is a modal flavoured tune with Flamenco style sketches. “Ouannassa” is a warm and beautiful ballad that will instantly remind you of “Naima”, the Coltrane classic that Torrent also covers here. “Bahia” is an exotic modal journey that transports you to the sites of Iberia. Overall the compositions here are less intense and more elegant. Torrent and his band are in their element here. They have delivered a marvellous collection of warm and melodic modal compositions certainly worth a listen or two.

Jazzbois – Still Blunted

Budapest resident trio Jazzbois specializes in hip-hop inspired jazz fusion. “Still Blunted”, their latest release is filled with a plethora of funky beats and sun drenched synth arrangements. “Chrome”, a bumpin’ mid-tempo tune is ignited by the thumping bass of Viktor Sagi. Dom Beats adds funky sax flurries on top of the groove. Bencze Molnar’s smoothing keys are the final touch. “Darker Than Disco” is high octane fusion with funky synths and infectious beats. “TooHi” is a funk jazz infused rework to the Stevie Wonder classic. If you enjoy jazz inspired beat makers like Kiefer you’ll no doubt enjoy this one. Their instrumentation combined with hip-hop sensibilities add up to definite satisfaction.

Malcolm Strachan – Point Of No Return [Haggis Records]

Scottish trumpeter Malcolm Strachan follows up his impressive debut with another engaging record. Where “About Time” showcased a straight ahead sound “Point Of No Return” taps into the CTI sound with warm melodic compositions. “Nossa Danca”  is a bubbly tune with a Latin groove layered with Strachan’s warm harmonic tone . “The Wanderer” is a mid tempo tune that instantly melts into your soul. It’s layered with notable contributions from pianist George Cooper. In addition, UK vocalist Jo Harrop adds heavenly wordless phrasings and Atroll Ransome on flute takes the tune to another level. Strachan’s working band is a cohesive unit that is on top of their game. Strachan captures the spirit of the CTI sound with an impressive collection of soul jazz grooves with some bossa rhythms for good measure.
