VA – Horse Meat Disco presents Disco Boogie from Brazil Vol.1 [Mr Bongo]

“Disco Boogie from Brazil Vol.1” is a compilation thirteen years in the making from London collective Horse Meat Disco. The four member unit consists of James Hillard, Severino Panzetta, Jim Stanton and Luke Howard. They started a residency at Eagle London in 2003. Nine years later Howard would embark on the first of many visits to Brazil, He would later receive an invitation to visit the headquarters of Mr Bongo records to listen to some rare obscure Brazilian flavoured boogie recordings. A compilation was approved only to lie in limbo due to licensing issues. Well the wait is finally over. “Harmony Cats” kicks off the comp with a funky cinematic theme and a thumping groove. “Sol De Verao” by Lafayette soars with soulful vocals, blistering brass and strings. “Rio Babilonia” is a mid tempo banger from Jorge Ben. It’s always a treat when crate diggers come across some hidden gems waiting for a second chance to be heard. This is an engaging compilation from the always reliable Mr Bongo

Marcos Valle – Túnel Acústico [Far Out Recordings]

“Tunel Acustico” is the twenty third album by renowned Brazilian vocalist Marcos Valle. Valle’s latest release captures the highlights of his sixty year career. Valle has spent much of his time living between Los Angeles and Rio and the music is a reflection of the musical soundscapes of both regions. The opening track “Todo Dia Santo” is a simmering tune that features Alex Malheiros on bass and Renato Massa on drums from the legendary group Asymuth. “Life Is What It is” was originally wriiren in the late seventies by Valle and Laudir De Oliveira from the band Chicago. The breezy remastered tune features a sterling guitar solo from Paulinho Guitarra. “Feels So Good” is another composition that has been sitting on the shelf for decades. Originally recorded with the late Leon Ware, it has received AI sampling courtesy of Far Out recordings in-house producer Daniel Maunick. Ware’s falsetto is a perfect blend to Valle’s vocals. The rest of the recording is filled with an array of sublime compositions you’ve come to expect from Valle. A marvelous release from Valle who shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Les Hommes – Si Cosi [Sudden Hunger Records]

London organ trio Les Hommes latest release “Si Cosi” is an atmospheric blend ranging from lounge to bossa with a touch of soulful jazz. Rory More’s cinematic organ compositions work well on the dance floor or in a lounge setting. He’s joined by Tarek on vibes and Vlad on drums. “Sonorissima Bay” a lanquid tune glides on the strength of the mellow thumping bass. More’s organ rhythms along with Tarek’s vibes make for an intoxicating listen. “Night Drives” is another mellow organ grinding burner highlighted by soothing flute melodies. More’s radiant hammond is a reminder that the organ trio is alive and well. This recording is a breath of fresh air. It picks up where their earlier recordings on the Italian label Schema records left off. An engaging record worthy of repeated listens.
