Web Web – Kover Kover [Compost Records]

Ten years in the game, the latest from Web Web is their first without any original compositions. “Kover Kover” reimagines an array of classic rock and Pop compositions and the results are quite impressive. The Grace Jones classic “Slave To The Rhythm” is evidence of that. Tony Lakatos’s Soprano dances on top of the spirited rhythm section. Drummer Peter Gall along with bassist Christian Von Kaphengst’s funky upright bass lays down a wicked groove that gets a hold on you. The group captures the psychedelic essence of Jimi Hendrix’s “Burning Of The Midnight Lamp”. They transform it into a low fi fusion gem. Joe Jackson’s “Stepping Out” is awashed in meditative blissful soundscapes. Web Web has taken a collection of standout tunes and placed their personal stamp on them. The results are truly marvelous. The unwritten rule is when you cover a tune, it should be as good or even better than the original. Mission accomplished.

Web Web – Plexus Plexus [Compost Records]

The latest release from Munich band Web Web features guitarist JJ Whitfield. Whitfield has led a number of bands, most recently the Poets of Rhythm. Previously he performed under the alias of Karl Hector & The Malcouns. He brings a dose of psychedelic guitar rhythms to the session and his presence pays dividends. “The Madness Of Ajax” is a mid tempo soul jazz number with Whitfield out front along with Tony Lakatos on flute. “Sacred Tree” is a warm and mellow heater, thanks in part to Lakatos melodic tenor sax. “Nyx” and “Cheiron” are two of the hazy psychedelic tunes. The latter erupts with Peter Gall’s melodic and spacey keys. The band demonstrates that they can play at a high level in all manner of styles. All of their albums have been impressive and this one is no exception.

Web Web – Web Max II [Compost Records]

The Munich based quartet return with their fifth album. “Web Max II” once again features producer Max Herre. Herre gives the disc an understated spiritual jazz vibe filled with moments of intense soloing. “Perennial Journey” features spoken word paying homage to the pioneers that paved the way before them. The tune has a seductive grooe aided by an infectious guitar rhythms and mediatative flute. “Testimony” is ignited by a brooding melody and haunting bass clarinet flurries alongside a heavenly chorus. “Olobo” is a sublime orchestral recording that features Carlos Nino on cymbals, chimes and other instruments. The band continues to explore the depths of spiritual jazz and come away with another marvelous recording.

VA – Glucklich Vol VI [Compost Records]

DJ/Producer Rainer Truby presents “Glucklich Vol VI”, a collection of rare Brazilian grooves worthy of a wider audience. Jon Lucien’s “Come With Me To Rio” sets the disc on an arc of engaging blissful compositions. This track was only available as a limited edition seven inch in Brazil. “Midnight Gigolos” from Brother Samba is a dreamy instrumental that will create visions of paradise. “Sonzeira” is a tune originally released by Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood label with Nina Miranda on vocals. Truby and frequent partner Corrado Bucci (Truccy) transform the track from sublime to infectious hip shaking samba layered with hipnotic percussion. It has taken twenty years for Truby to deliver a follow up to Vol 5. The wait has been long but the selections here are quite impressive. Another winner from the Munich based Compost Record label.
