Emile Londonien – Legacy [Naïve Records]

Emile Londonien is a trio from Strabourg, France who have emmersed themselves in London club culture. “Legacy” captures the essence of their sound by merging jazz rhythms with soul and broken beat grooves. The disc begins with the title track, a lo-fi instrumental with a simmering horn section courtesy of trumpeter Antoine Berjeaut and saxophonist Leon Phal. They shift gears on “Make it Easy”, a percolating tune ignited by house grooves and sublime vocals from Lara Issa. Although “House Party” is under two minutes it’s a live performance filled with infectious energy, providing a taste of what they’re capable of on stage. “londonien” demonstrates that this trio can jam in all manner of styles. An impressive release certainly worth checking out.

Kevin Reynolds – A Certain Circumstance [Yoruba Records]

Kevin Reynolds had the fortune of growing up in the musical oasis of Detroit where he absorbed a variety of sounds. As a kid he loved hip-hop but the trajectory of his life was changed when he attended his first underground electronic party. From there he has ascended to becoming a premiere producer of soulful elctronic music. Reynolds full length debut, “A Certain Circumstance” is evidence of that. Released on Yoruba records, the thirteen track lp is awash with deep house grooves and atmospheric mid tempo gems. The opener, “Abandoned” emobodies the yoruba sound with infectious percussion rhythms and warm keys. “Para Ti” is another floor burner that features fellow Detoit native Paul Randolph. Yoruba records has been delivering potent recordings for some time now. Reynolds release is no exception.

VA – 13 Years Later Part 1 [Local Talk Records]

Ever since they premiered in 2010, Local Talk records has become one of the premiere labels in essential house music. The Stockholm based label, started by Mad Mats and Tooli consistently delivers the kind of house that resonates with you years after it’s release. Some of your favorite DJ/Producers have dropped a track or two from Opolopo and Kyodai to Soulphiction among others. “Local Talk – 13 Years later” demonstrates why they’re held in high regard with nine potent tracks certain to grip your hips and move. “Come Back To Me” is a soulful house number from veteran DJ/Producer Alex Attias. “Open Destiny” is hypnotic deep house from Dan Tenor City and Tom Funk. “Where You Come From” is a soulful lounge number from Rawson And Jackson. This compilation just scratches the surface of the Local Talk vault but it’s still a great place to start. After you finish enjoying this release you should head over to their bandcamp page as well. Pour yourself a glass of wine and enjoy hours of essential house music.

Cody Currie – Lucas [Toy Tonics]

East London born multi-instrumentalist Cody Currie makes a splash with his full length debut “Lucas”. Now based in Berlin, Currie’s debut is coming out on Toy Tonics. The Berlin based label is well known for infectious House grooves. “Lucas” delivers instant party vibes while blending a touch of house, funk and Disco grooves. In addition, Currie has some very talented friends on board here starting with vocalist Jitwam on the infectious boogie tune “Red Hot”. Ziggy from the Austrailian band Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange injects their brand of jazz infused funk grooves to the track and also on “Deja Vu”. Other highlights include “Night Sky”, another percolating dance track featuring vocalist Eliza Rose. A number of burning house flavored tracks round out the disc. Currie eschews sampling and adds live instrumentation that adds warmth. You’re certain to have happy feet with this impressive release.

Nate08 – Furaha [Needwant]

Hailing from Mumbai, bassist/producer Nate08 demonstrates that he has a flair for the good groove on his new release “Furaha”. The eleven track lp packs plenty of bounce, lush arrangements and gorgeous chords certain to keep your body in motion. The title track kicks off with sparkling percussion and sublime guitar melodies. “Sunrise Sunfall” embodies many of the tracks on board here; crisp drums, deep bass lines and gorgeous melodies. Nate08’s vocals are the icing that rounds out this tune. “Want You” is another up-tempo burner that’s enhanced by the blissed out vocals from Megan Murray. No wonder Nate08 has become a fixture in the Indian independent music scene. A marvelous collection of spacey instrumental dance tracks along with infectious vocal tunes filled with good vibes.

Guinu – Palagô [Razor-N-Tape]

Brazilian musician/producer Pedro Guinu debuts with the samba flavored “Palego” The title is a homage to Lapa, a neighborhood in downtown Rio. the place to be for night life, good food and good music. The album reflects that vibe with an array of simmering tunes. “Haja Fe” is layered with infectious polyrhythms, lush vocals and sunny chords. “Amanha” is a mellow samba instrumental slow burner. “Joana Joa” kicks off with a lovely flute melody that sets in motion the laid-back North West Brazilian rhythms. A marvelous record that effortlessly highlights Northern Brazilians music and the pulse of the community. If you dig the sounds of Marcos Valle and Joao Donato then you’ll certainly enjoy this one.

Divorce From New York – Sausalito [High Praise Edits]

Producer Alvaro Granda aka Divorce From New York returns with his sophomore LP “Sausalito”. You may be familiar with Granda as one half of San Sebastian based production duo Reykjavvik606. They’ve worked with the likes of Tenderlonious and Ishmael Ensemble among others. “Sausalito” is filled with rugged broken beat rhythms layered with mind bending chords and harmonies. The opening track “Sausalito” kicks off with euphoric chords before easing into a sparse, edgy hypnotic rhythm. “Paralelo66” erupts with heavy bruk rhythms and wobbly synths. “Last Day of Sunset” oozes with infectious Summertime energy and good vibes. The pulsating Disco rhythms make this a worthy highlight. “Mapacho River” is a sonic journey aligned with a rough edged drum kick and jungle rhythms. Short and sweet with only seven tracks, Granda delivers a banger with each track packing a big punch. Granda is someone to keep an eye on. With beats like these I can’t wait to hear what he does next.

VA – Luke Una Presents E Soul Cultura [Mr Bongo Records]

Brighton based independent label Mr Bongo records has been an essential home for global tunes and compilations from South London to West Africa and beyond for over thirty years. “Luke Una Presents E Soul Cultura” is one of their latest to hit the shelves. DJ Luke Una, ogirinally from Sheffield moved to Manchester and has become a sought after DJ whose musical taste covers a myriad of styles. The fifteen track compilation showcases Una’s musical palette with hard to find treats as well as familiar crowd pleasers. “Space Queen” from King Erisson is an Afro Carribean mid-tempo gem from the consumate percussionist. “Robot Man” displays a funkier side to the Legendary reedist Yusef Lateef. “La Cyclope” is intoxicating jazz fusion from Swiss drummer Daniel Humair, bassist Henri Texier and Saxophonist Francois Jeanneau. Jeanneau unleashes a flurry of glorious melodies on soprano while Humair and Texier create an infectious groove on this incredibly hard to find heater. There’s plenty here that will draw a smile and inject instant toe tapping due to the familiarity. The others you may not recognize but you’ll enjoy them nonetheless.

Inkswel & The Snaglepuss – Chasing Infinity [Cosmocities Records]

DJ/Producer Jules Habib, aka Inkswel has proven to have traces of funk and a knack for the groove in his DNA. He has compiled a catalogue of essential grooves ranging from boom bap hip-hop to funk n soul. Inkswel’s latest release “Chasing Infinity” is no exception. It’s a album filled with bumpin tracks aided by a star studded lineup. “Everything” is tasty hip-hop featuring veteran rapper Dudley Perkins. “Butterflies” is laid back cosmic funk featuring the familiar falsetto vocals of Steve Spacek. The title track is an infectious dance track with a thumping groove that features veteran House vocalist Oliver Knight. We’re just scratching the surface here as there’s notable contributions from Kylie Audist, Amp Fiddler and more. An energetic album filled with various tempos certain to shake your hips and press repeat.

Harvey Sutherland – Boy [House Anxiety]

Melbourne based producer/pianist Mike Katz aka Harvey Sutherland has dropped a number of EPs since 2014 that demonstrated a flair for soulful grooves and infectious piano rhythms. “Boy”, his full length debut is filled with future funky synth grooves and dreamy rhythms. The title track is a mellow cascade of swirling synths and hazy vibes. The tempo picks up with “Time On My Side”, an ambient fusion of beats and synths. “Age Of Acceleration” goes one step further, the thumping beats and bass set up the groove. Sutherland lays down dazzling synths along with his honey tinged vocals on top. “Angry Young Man” flirts with a boogie groove primed to whip you into a party mood. Recorded between London and Los Angeles which feels approiate. The album certainly has a LA vibe which suits him well here. An impressive release that ensures you’re gonna have a funky good time.

Crackazat – Evergreen [Freerange Records]

“Evergreen” is the latest release from multi-instrumentalist Ben Jacobs, aka Crackazat. The twelve track lp is a bundle of infectious house grooves layered with joyful chords and vibrant melodies. Jacob’s fingerprints are everywhere from tasty guitar licks and electronics to his sparkling falsetto vocals. Among the highlights are “It’s All Different” a delicious house tune that finds Jacobs crooning over a pulsating groove and a heart pounding beat. “True Power” is equally engaging. The bass and drums set up the groove, and Jacobs layers glorious synths on top. If you don’t move to this you need to check your pulse. Overall this is a fantastic voyage of wondrous house tracks that will inspire instant body movement. It’s no wonder that Jacobs is rising up the ranks as one of the premier house producers on the scene today. With the standout London based label Freerange records behind him, the skies the limit.

Daniel Maulnick – Persistence [Far Out Recordings]

Multi-instrumentalist Daniel Maulnick, son of the infamous Jean “Bluey” Maulnick has certainly blazed his own trail these days. In a short time he’s become a prolific producer for Far Out Recordings and has delivered a number of essential remixes and numerous guest appearances. Maunick’s latest release “Persistance” pulls from influences ranging from drum n bass to Detroit house and garage. The opener “Arraia” exudes infectious deep house rhythms that soothes you even in it’s intense moments. “The Love has Gone” provides blistering drum n bass grooves. “Just Deserts” channels the spirits of Theo Parrish and other Detroit house pioneers. Like many tracks here it has a meditative quality that lingers long after the song is over. “Persistance” is all about pushing through the tough times of lockdown and coming through on the other side. It’s not easy for everyone to quaratine and emerge with essential recordings but Maulnick certainly does and hits the mark.

VA – Future Sounds of Jazz Vol 15 [Compost Records]

“Future Sounds of Jazz Vol 15” is the latest compilation from the reliable German based Compost Records. The twenty one track release features compositions with sketches of jazz layered over house grooves, electronics and African rhythms. The selections are curated by Label head Michael Reinboth. The disc kicks off with the warm percussion driven groove of “Last Home” from Bristol based DJ/producer Typesun. “At Les” from Toshio Matasura is a rich and vibrant composition laced with percolating guitar rhythms. “Sunday Afternoon” is a ten minute atmospheric gem filled with relentless beats out front and seductive horns and jazz tinged chords around the edges. The track has a meditative quality that pulls you before you even know it. “Future Sounds of Jazz” is a sampling of worlds colliding, the visceral vibes of future sounds with the cerebral cool of Jazz. It’s a splendid compilation from Reinboth.
